I’ve lived through the golden age of verbal communication and have clearly come out the other side.

Make no mistake, though. This is not another essay lamenting the shrinking societal role of literacy, literature, or longform journalism. That would be no revelation whatsoever. Anyone who has children or reads business communications with any frequency, knows that the arts of reading and writing are no longer arts at all. At best, they are utilities — skills to be employed rudimentarily and only when absolutely necessary.
